Tout embrasserTaken daily over a twenty-five-year period, the photographs comprising Tout embrasser constitute a veritable slice of time comprising friends’ faces, favourite landscapes and precious scenes from everyday life that Raymonde April is an expert at capturing. The title of her monumental project reflects a deeply human ideal—that of managing to see all the phenomena of one’s whole life in a single glance. However, the desynchronized photographic sequences destroy the reassuring illusion that a life, like a film, is a thread with a beginning, a middle and an end.
