Charles Daudelin

Training
  • Took drawing classes in his hometown.
  • Studied at the École du meuble de Montréal under Paul-Émile Borduas.
Artistic production
  • Drew, painted in oils and watercolours, sculpted, made jewellery and designed puppets.
  • Created major sculptures and large-scale public art works.
Alongside his artistic career
  • Member of the Contemporary Art Society (CAS).
  • Stayed in New York in 1944 and regularly visited Fernand Léger’s studio.
  • Left for France in 1946 on a scholarship.
  • Taught at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal for four years.
  • Won many awards and got commissions.
Of note
  • A pioneer of modern sculpture integrated into public venues.
  • In 1974, his work was featured in major retrospectives at the Musée du Québec (now Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec) and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.
  • In 1985, received the Paul-Émile-Borduas award, the most prestigious honour in the Québec art world.
Noteworthy accomplishments
  • L’Embâcle, a fountain for Place du Québec in Paris.
  • The altarpiece of the Chapelle du Sacré-Cœur of the Notre-Dame de Montréal church.
