Théophile Hamel

Training
  • Apprenticed to Antoine Plamondon.
  • Studied in Europe from 1843 to 1846.
Artistic production
  • Admired the work of Italian painter Titian and drew inspiration from it.
  • Throughout his career, produced major portraits of politicians, notables and members of the clergy. Also painted the portraits of historic figures, such as Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain, and religious canvases.
  • Became the government’s “official painter”.
  • His portraits constitute an important source of documentation on mid-19th century Canadian society.
Features
  • Married at age 40 into the intellectual elite. His father-in-law, a top-ranking attorney, played an important role in the government. Through him, Hamel earned great renown.
