As an academic exercise, Baillairgé etched a reproduction of a figure from a fresco painted circa 1609 by Domenico Zampieri, called Domenichino. He studied anatomy and muscles in motion and learned by imitating the French style of the 17th century. Using engravings that reproduced the works of early and modern masters, he began drawing by copying.
