Mère et enfantThe death of Judas Ullulaq, in 1999, was a great loss. The Inuit art world lost one of its best ambassadors and the small community of Gjoa Haven lost one of its main sculptors. In keeping with Inuit tradition, Judas Ullulaq had a sense of sharing. Twenty-five members of his community benefited from his generosity. When money was needed, Ullulaq took to his tools. Regardless of the subject, Ullulaq’s work is provocative, disquieting and delightful. His pieces depict figures that are both caricatures and magnificent. Their creator has left a corpus that is disturbing and mysterious. Some of his pieces will no doubt always remain enigmas. (Free translation)(Raymond Brousseau, Inuit. Quand la parole prend forme.
