Jean Dallaire
Hull (Québec, Canada), 1916 – Vence (France), 1965
Training
  • Studied at the École technique de Hull in 1932 and 1993, where he was introduced to commercial and scientific drawing.
  • Attended the Le Caveau artistic and cultural centre.
  • Studied at Central Technical School in Toronto.
  • In 1938, obtained a scholarship allowing him to study in Paris.
  • Studied at the Académie André Lhote in Paris until the city was occupied by the German army in June 1940.
Artistic production
  • Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and the Surrealists impressed the young artist while he was in Europe. From these stylistic influences, Dallaire composed his own unique corpus.
  • His work illustrates a mastery of drawing and enormous originality, both the treatment of his subjects and his use of colour.
Alongside his artistic career
  • Taught drawing and painting at the École des beaux-arts de Québec for five years.
  • Lived in Ottawa for six years and worked as a draftsman for the National Film Board of Canada.
Highlight
  • On October 17, 1940, Dallaire was arrested by the German army and imprisoned in the British civilian camp, where he remained until the end of the German occupation in 1944.
