Jacques Cartier rencontre les Indiens à Stadaconé, 1535Standing, palms raised heavenward, Jacques Cartier and his soldiers bring civilization to the wilderness. On the left, hiding in the foliage, the distrustful Indians hesitate to come to meet the French explorer. Clad in their best garments, the soldiers dominate the Natives through their position in the canvas.
