James Wilson Morrice

Training
  • Studied law after having received a degree in fine arts from the University of Toronto.
  • Studied at the Académie Julian in Paris for a short while.
Artistic production
  • American painter James McNeill Whistler significantly influenced Morrice.
  • Early in his career, Morrice learned Impressionist techniques that he would later use to develop his own style.
  • Met Henri Matisse around 1909. His palette of colours lightened.
  • His works recount his many travels.
Alongside his artistic career
  • Independently wealthy, Morrice spent more than half his life in Europe, mainly Paris. He travelled and struck up friendships with the artists he met during his trips abroad.
Features
  • Became friends with poet Paul Verlaine and painter Henri Matisse.
