L’Incendie du quartier Saint-Jean à Québec, vu vers l’ouestThe night of June 28, 1845, a major fire started in Québec City’s Saint-Jean district. The flames, which lit the sky, spread from house to house leaving several thousands of people homeless. A total of 1300 homes were destroyed. One month earlier, the Saint-Roch district was ravaged by a similar catastrophe. In this painting, Joseph Légaré immortalized an event that marked Québec City’s history.
