François Baillairgé
Québec City (Québec, Canada), 1759 – 1830
Training
  • At age 14, began studying sculpture, carpentry and architecture with his father, Jean Baillairgé.
  • Studied at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture de Paris from 1778 to 1781, although it was rare, at this time, for artists from the colony to study abroad.
Artistic production
  • This multidisciplinary artist created furniture, theatre decors, signs and figureheads, decorative indoor frescoes and painted coats of arms.
Features
  • Came from a Québec City family that made its mark in the art world for several decades.
  • Joined his father fighting in the American Invasion of 1775.
  • A literature buff, he read the great French authors Racine, Molière and Rousseau. His love of theatre led him to act as well.
